Begin at the Beginning

I love art. I discovered sketching in my pre-teen years and did it as it came - with no formal training. I've since lost those drawings, much to my sadness, but it gave me an understanding of what I most loved to do. As I grew older and got involved in the legal and business worlds, I still surrounded myself with artists, always feeling that another aspect of my personality was not being expressed.  At the beginning of this year, I began to sketch again. Not as a new year's resolution, but because there was a need to do it. I have since started going to live figure drawing sessions, taking some online and in person lessons, and drawing at every possible opportunity. I have far to go to get to where I want. But I realize that like with everything, you have to begin at the beginning.

Here is one of my recent drawings. Two pears and part of an eggshell.  To begin the process of really learning the tools, I have used only a B pencil, darkening and lightening the image as necessary. This is really an exercise in learning to shade and control the amount of graphite added to the paper. I am now thinking of other ways to render these same images using graphite powder instead of all pencil. More experiments ahead.

Another recent sketch of sea shells that I collected in Sanibel Island, Florida.
